datamind.earth stands on the work of thousands of mappers and several public institutions. This page lists every source, its licence, and how to rebuild the map data yourself.

Map data: OpenStreetMap

Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors. Contains information from OpenStreetMap, which is made available here under the Open Database License (ODbL) 1.0. A copy of the licence text: ODbL-1.0.txt.

Every map drawn by datamind.earth carries the credit on the map itself: in the corner of interactive maps, and burned into exported images as © OpenStreetMap contributors · openstreetmap.org/copyright.

Build recipe

The vector tiles are the Protomaps daily planet build, served unchanged. The database is not altered: every border and naming rule is applied by the map style at render time. The build that is live right now is named in /current.json. To reproduce it:

# 1. The Protomaps daily planet build, generated from the OpenStreetMap planet
# with Planetiler and the open basemap profile (github.com/protomaps/basemaps).
curl -fLO --retry 5 -C - https://build.protomaps.com/<YYYYMMDD>.pmtiles

# 2. Integrity check with the PMTiles CLI (github.com/protomaps/go-pmtiles).
pmtiles verify <YYYYMMDD>.pmtiles

# 3. Serve the archive with any PMTiles server (datamind.earth uses its own Go
# service, which only adds the key check and caching headers).
pmtiles serve . --port 8080

The map data stays under the ODbL. It is not covered by the DataMind product licence.

Tiles and schema: Protomaps

Tile schema and basemap layers by Protomaps (protomaps/basemaps): code under the BSD 3-Clause licence, map design under CC0. The datamind.earth styles are a full restyle in the DataMind brand and are not affiliated with Protomaps.

Terrain: Mapterhorn and Copernicus

Terrain tiles © Mapterhorn, built from the Copernicus GLO-30 digital elevation model and the national elevation models listed on the Mapterhorn attribution page.

Copernicus GLO-30: © DLR e.V. 2010-2014 and © Airbus Defence and Space GmbH 2014-2018, provided under COPERNICUS by the European Union and ESA; all rights reserved. Used under the Copernicus full, free and open licence.

Natural Earth

Includes Natural Earth data (public domain): the low-zoom land and boundary lines in the tiles, the land of the home page globe, and the outlines that drive the border policy.

Land cover: ESA WorldCover

The land cover layer at zoom 0 to 7 comes from the Daylight Map Distribution, vectorised from ESA WorldCover 2020: © ESA WorldCover project 2020 / Contains modified Copernicus Sentinel data (2020) processed by the ESA WorldCover consortium, licensed under CC BY 4.0.

Names and outlines

  • Country recognition and official place names: Wikidata, CC0 1.0, keyed by the wikidata tags in OpenStreetMap.
  • Administrative outlines used by the border policy: geoBoundaries (Runfola, D. et al. 2020, PLoS ONE 15(4): e0231866), CC BY 3.0.

Type

Map labels are set in signed-distance glyphs derived from FiraGO (© The FiraGO Project Authors, Carrois Corporate GbR and HERE Europe B.V.), licensed under the SIL Open Font License 1.1; the derived glyph stacks are named "DataMind Map" so they are never mistaken for the original fonts. Code on this site is set in Fira Code (OFL 1.1).
